At the beginning of the year, while some of the students are emerging readers, some are just beginning to show interest in letters. In our class, there are many areas where students are exposed and interact with letters.
We started with letters and words we are most familiar with, our names! At one of the stations, students were given the opportunity to create with names with magnetic letters. What fun!

Another way students practiced recognizing their name was our attendance tree. I originally wanted to write student's names on a rock and have them decorate them, but I was not able to find nice and smooth pebbles so my amazing teaching assistant made this paper tree for us.
Every morning, when students enter the classroom, they find the wooden piece with their name on and hang them on the tree as a sign that they came to school.

Learning letters with words we connect with is meaningful. Students who are just beginning to recognize letters begin to identify letters in their names and other's names. Those who already recognize their name get to see how other's names look like and are spelled.
